First Visit

What You Should Expect

Most infants’ teeth start coming in at the age of 6 months to a year. The recommendation among pediatric dental professionals is that infants should first visit a dentist when they have two top and two bottom teeth or when a child is one year old.

If your child is older than a year and has never been to the dentist, of course it’s not too late! Make an appointment with Growing Smiles, and we’ll check to see that your child’s oral health is progressing as it should be. Good oral health is an important part of growing up. Baby teeth are needed for developing good eating habits, learning to speak, and developing facial muscles.

The first visit will consist an examination of teeth and gums, a cleaning and fluoride varnish. X-rays may be recommended depending on your child’s age and findings. After the examination, we’ll discuss our findings with you and what you can do to ensure the healthy development of your child’s teeth. Other topics we may discuss are smart practices for cleaning their teeth, how to avoid cavities, and how to stop any bad habits like thumbsucking.

This initial visit is also important to start laying a foundation for good dental habits and to get your child comfortable with going to the dentist. We welcome parents to accompany their child/children throughout their visit. It’s important to us to make your child’s experience at Growing Smiles comfortable, stress free and yes, even fun!
